The Rushville Police Department School Resource Officer Program is a multi-faceted program that allows for more targeted community policing among our youth and safeguarding what this community holds in highest esteem: our children. The School Resource Officer Program places Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certified officers with advanced School Resource Officer (SRO) training through the Indiana School Resource Officers’ Association into schools within the Rush County School Corporation each day of the school year. The School Resource Officer Program currently has one full-time SRO and a pool of part-time SROs.

Each SRO conducts proactive patrol throughout the school corporation and works closely with the school administrators and teaching staff to provide a safe environment for the students and staff. Each officer wears their department-issued uniform and utilizes a marked patrol vehicle.

In addition to their law enforcement duties, they interact with students and educate them in the law. Together with the school staff, they help solve problems and are an available resource for students and parents. The program has successfully improved the relationship between the police and young people in the community. The officers are involved in school emergency planning and response as well as emergency drills.

Each School Resource Officer is a liaison between the school corporation and the Rushville Police Department. This relationship has facilitated excellent communication on matters of safety and security. The Department is proud of the longstanding relationship it has with Rush County Schools and looks forward to its continuation for many years to come.

The School Resource Officer Unit falls under the Special Operations Division within the Operations Section of the Rushville Police Department. The unit supervisor for the SRO Program is Lead School Resource Officer Robert Bridges (rbridges@cityofrushville.in.gov).
