The Rushville Police Department believes training is the backbone of a successful department.
FIELD TRAINING PROCESS
The Rushville Police Department has a robust field training process to help new officers on the path to success. The program lasts from 9 to 12 weeks depending on metrics for success built into the program. During this program, new officers pass through several stages of growth facilitated by on-staff, certified Field Training Officers. These officers guide and oversee new officers to ensure proper retention of skills and information as well as to ensure safety practices are emphasized and exercised. The Field Training Process is unique in its design in that it can be administered before or after attendance at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). The program can also be split with some instruction before and some instruction after attendance at the Academy. The Field Training Process provides officers with the skill set to perform safely and effectively while best serving the citizen in the City of Rushville.
TRAINING DAY
For over a decade, the Rushville Police Department has provided each member of the department with up to 8 hours of professional development time every two weeks. The Training Day gives each member of the agency the opportunity to accumulate over 100 hours of continuing education training in a calendar year without leaving the Rushville area. The Training Day starts with physical fitness training in our on-site gymnasium followed by formal instruction on the topic of the day. The topics of instruction range across a broad spectrum of law enforcement-related tasks and are suited for any officer whether a novice or a veteran. Training is facilitated using a team model resulting in everyone contributing, learning and reaching a successful conclusion without leaving anyone behind. Each day of instruction is certified for continuing education credit hours with the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy by one of our on-staff ILEA certified instructors.
Many training topics are presented on site at the Rushville Police Department training facilities. Training topics are varied but, in the past, have included such topics as:

INSTRUCTORS
The Rushville Police Department encourages its officers to become ILEA certified instructors once they attain the minimum qualifications. This allows the department to facilitate its own high quality, department-tailored training as well as joint training with other agencies. As ILEA certified instructors, our officers assist with instructing at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy during firearms, physical tactics and emergency vehicle operation training. Our instructors are highly skilled and very competent in their individual areas of expertise.
