Criminal Investigations
The Criminal Investigations component of the Investigations Section serves as the focus of the departmental detectives. The Rushville Police Department detectives conduct follow-up investigations for criminal cases and respond to crime scenes when requested. Each case is reviewed for solvability factors and assigned to a detective for follow-up based on a pre-established rotation. Both detectives work closely together to ensure that all criminal investigations are carried out efficiently and effectively.
The primary function of Criminal Investigations is to conduct follow-up investigations of reported crimes. These investigations consist of interviewing suspects, victims, and witnesses; analyzing information for validity, reliability, and accuracy; and compiling a comprehensive and factual case file to be presented in court.
Our detectives are also tasked with crime analysis, surveillance in areas of criminal activity, monitoring drug offenders, narcotics investigations, and background investigations for police department applicants. The Rushville Police Department detectives are partly responsible for the receiving, processing, storing and purging of property/evidence collected by officers during their duties. They are aided in this task by a part-time evidence technician. The integrity of the chain-of-custody and the integrity of the evidence/property room are critical for the successful prosecution of criminal cases. Detectives are selected through a formal process and receive additional investigative training because of their assignment.
Criminal Investigations taking place in the City of Rushville are handled by Detective Jordan Hoeing (jhoeing@cityofrushville.in.gov) and Detective Caitlin Herbert (cherbert@cityofrushville.in.gov).
